Blood pressure checks in clinic

A cuff is placed around your upper arm to measure your blood pressure while you sit comfortably. We take two or three readings during the appointment, which usually takes a few minutes.

What is 24-hour blood pressure monitoring?

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring uses an arm cuff connected to a small portable recorder. You wear it for 24 hours while it takes readings automatically throughout the day and night.

This provides a broader picture than a single clinic reading. It can help investigate differences between readings taken in a clinical setting and those recorded during your usual routine.

The cuff is normally set to inflate every 30 minutes during the day and every hour overnight. Tell us your usual sleeping and waking times so the settings can be adjusted appropriately.

How to prepare

• Wear a loose-fitting top with sleeves that leave room for an upper-arm cuff.
• Follow the preparation instructions provided with your booking.
• Continue your prescribed medication unless your clinician advises otherwise.
• Shower before your appointment if you are having 24-hour monitoring, as the equipment must stay dry.

Wearing your blood pressure monitor

Our team will fit the monitor and explain how to look after it.

Follow the advice provided about your daily activities. When the cuff inflates, keep your arm relaxed and still where it is safe to do so. You may feel a temporary squeezing sensation.

Record activities and symptoms in the diary provided. Do not bathe, shower or swim while wearing the equipment.

Return the monitor and diary at the agreed time so your readings can be analysed.

Your results and next steps

Your results will be reviewed and provided within 2 weeks (approximately) of completing your test and returning any monitoring equipment.

We will explain your readings and discuss whether further tests or follow-up are recommended. If needed, we can discuss an ECG or referral for consultant review.
